The Top and The Best Artist

The Top Artist

1. Justin Bieber
Justin Drew Bieber born March 1, 1994 is a Canadian pop musician, actor, and singer-songwrite. Bieber was discovered in 2008 by American talent manager Scooter Braun, who came across Bieber's videos on YouTube and later became his manager. Braun arranged for him to meet with entertainer Usher Raymond, Georgia, and Bieber was signed to Raymond braun Media Group(RBMG), and then to an Island Records recording contract offered by record executive L.A. Reid.
The teen pop superstar upped the ante: He toppled the box office with his 3-D concert flick, "Never Say Never," and released a slew of new music, including his chart-topping holiday album, Under the Mistletoe. And when he wasn't busy recording, shooting videos, rapping, shufflin', touring and tweeting, he romanced Selena Gomez. Not even tabloid headlines could rain on his parade. In fact, Bieber proved that if he wants to try something in his career, he won't just try— he'll probably succeed. — Jocelyn Vena

2. One Direction
If you haven't heard of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson, there are millions of onesie-sporting, Tumblr-blogging, poster-kissing, lyric-memorizing, Union Jack-manicuring girls who could fill you in. With not one, but two #1 albums in less than a year, Brit boy band Onw Direction has made 2012 their year. The guys have gone from Simon Cowell's pet "X Factor" project to worldwide superstars, and here's proof: They've won big at the VMas, rocked "Saturday Night Live," buddied up with Sasha and Malia Obama, sold out NYC's Madison Square Garden in 10 minutes, closed out the Olympics and even met the queen! — Emilee Lindner
They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and finishing third in the seven series of British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010. Propelled to international success by the power of social media, their two albums Up All Night (2011) and Take Me Home (2012), broke several records, topped the charts of most major markets, and generated hit singles, including "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young". Now, the top favourite song is "Kiss You".

3. Taylor Swift
If you've caught Swift in concert, you know she sees her life as the equivalent of riding a unicorn to prom wearing a glittery dress with the cutest boy in school on her arm. Well, 2012 was like that, but even better. Her risk-taking fourth studio album, Red,, sold 1.2 million copies in its first week, spawned massive hits like "We are Never Ever Getting Back Togheter" she dated a Kennedy and a One Directioner and continued packing houses across the globe. She topped it off with three Grammy nominations and one Golden Globe nod and a place in the gossip-mag hall of fame as one-half of the power couple Haylor  — G.K.

4. Bruno Mars
Peter Gene Hernandez (born October 8, 1985), known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age and performed in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood. He graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a musical career. Mars produced songs for other artists, joining production team the Smeezingtons.
Mars had an unsuccessful stint with Motown Records, but then signed with Atlantic in 2009. He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothin' on You" by B.o.B, and "Billionare" by Trvie McCoy. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the worldwide number-one singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. Mars was nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, winning Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are". His second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox, was released on December 11, 2012.

5. Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen came out of nowhere and quickly became one of pop's biggest stars thanks to "Call Me Maybe," which ranked as our Best Song of 2012. Jepsen ruled the charts, the radio and, most notably, our hearts. But Bieber's discovery proved to be more than a one-hit wonder. She partied the night away with Owl City on this summer's anthem, "Good Time" and got us dancing with her cute take on club hook-ups on "This Kiss" which is kinda weird because she probably always gets carded by bouncers. — J.V.
6. Rihanna
If you thought this good girl had gone bad years ago, Princess Rih Rih got even naughtier in 2012. Riding high off the success of last year's Talk That Talk, she decided this would be the year she'd fight aliens on the big screen and shine bright like a diamond, lighting up Billboard with her latest release, unapologetic But she seemed to spend as much time on the gossip pages as she did on the charts. Her friendship with Chris Brown culminated in lots of speculation, one funky collaboration and many raised eyebrows. Rih wants the world to know she'll do whatever she wants whenever she wants. No apologies necessary. — J.V.
7. Katy Perry
Katy Perry found success by unapologetically being herself. She sang about aliens, her foggy memories of house parties, lost love, true love, being yourself and everything in between. It's easy for fans to connect to Perry and her music: She's an open book. And in 2011, she turned a few more pages. Riding high off the success of 2010's Teenage Dream, Perry didn't rest on her laurels. Instead, she set the bar even higher by hitting the road on the California Dreams Tour, where night after night, decked out in candy-colored clothes, she belted out her greatest hits and empowered her fans with tracks like "Firework." That anthem, originally released late last year, became so ubiquitous this year that it finds itself at #10 on MTV's Best Songs of 2011 list. In August, she took home the VMA for Video of the year for — you guessed it — "Firework."
8. Adele
No artist was more quietly ubiquitous this year than Adele. When it came to the charts, she dominated: 21was the top-selling album of 2011 and "Rolling in the Deep" was the year's biggest song. She ruled because everyone, from millennials to their mothers and maybeeven their grandparents, could all agree that hers was the best, most universally appealing mainstream music released this year. There was no need for a year-round media assault, no reason to cause a Twitter beef; heck, she only needed to release two singles to keep it all afloat. Why? Because she's just that good. — J.M.

9. Greyson Chance
Greyson Michael Chance  was born on August 16, 1997 in Wichita Falls, Texas, and currently resides in Edmond, Oklahoma is an American pop rock singer, songwriter, pianist whose April 2010 performance of Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" at a sixth-grade music festival became a hit on YouTube gaining over 48 million views as of September 12, 2012. Two of his original compositions, "Stars" and "Broken Hearts", gained over 5 and 7 million views respectively on his YouTube channel. His début single, "Waiting Outside the Lines", was released in October 2010. Chance's début album, Hold On Till the Night, was released on August 2, 2011.
